Introduction

The Centre for Applied Research in Electronics was established in 1971 with the main objective of providing focus to coordinated research and training in specialized areas in Electronics. Since its inception, the Centre has concentrated its R&D programs in three specific areas of Applied Electronics namely, Microwaves, Signal Processing and Microelectronics. The Centre has completed several major sponsored projects in these areas leading to technology development, know-how transfer to user agencies and national recognition. Emphasis on technology development has lead to the creation of infrastructure that offers the necessary base for advanced and contemporary experimental research.

Over the years, in keeping with the national interest and advances in the above areas, the Centre has expanded its R&D programs. The present focus of the Centre is in the following areas in which it has established several advanced Research Laboratories:

  • Dielectric integrated guide technology for millimeter wave systems.
  • Microwave and millimeter wave passive components and antennas using MEMS technology.
  • Underwater acoustics-detection, parameter estimation and classification of underwater objects.
  • Speech and Auditory signal processing.
  • Surface acoustic wave devices.
  • Nondestructive characterization using thermo-acoustic-optic techniques.
  • Silicon micro-machining and sensors using MEMS

The Centre has 11 faculty (1 jointly with Physics) working in three areas. The Centre has its own PhD program with 35 students presently. The Centre also has been running a vibrant M.Tech program in Radio Frequency Design and Technology since July 2004. This program takes about 30 students each year including candidates in the sponsored postgraduate training programs in the areas of Microwaves / Millimetre Waves and Underwater Electronics / Signal Processing. CARE faculty also participate in the general UG/PG teaching programs in the Electrical Engineering department.
